Description

The SparkFun Redboard Turbo microcontroller board can be programmed in Arduino, CircuitPython, and MicroPython. The board has a form factor similar to the Arduino Uno R3, but with more processing power, memory, and I/O.

Processor
The board features is a ATSAMD21G18 Single-Core 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ processor clocked at 48MHz. The processor also includes low power idle and standby sleep modes.
Memory
  • 32KB of SRAMStatic Random Access Memory
  • 256KB of Flash
  • 4MB SPISerial Peripheral Interface Flash chip
  • No EEPROMElectrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory
I/OInput/Output
  • 26x Digital I/O and PWMPulse-Width Modulation (3.3V Logic)
  • 12-Channel 12-bit ADCAnalog-to-Digital Converter (ADC, A/D, or A-to-D) 350ksps (3.3V Max). There are six dedicated analog pins A0 - A5 and the other 6 are on digital pins.
  • 1-Channel 10-bit DACDigital-to-Analog Converter (DAC, D/A, or D-to-A) 350ksps (3.3V Max) using the analog or digital pins.
  • Communication interfaces: UARTUniversal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter, I2CInter-Integrated Circuit. Also referred to as IIC or I2C., SPISerial Peripheral Interface, I2SInter-IC Sound, and LINLocal Interconnect Network. QwiicQwiic connectors are SparkFun's name for 4-pin JST SH connectors with 1.0mm pitch. These connectors were implemented on SparkFun boards to make it easy to plug-n-play various sensors and devices without soldering and wiring. Qwiic is cross-compatible with Adafruit's STEMMA QT connectors. connector for I2C.
  • Built-in USB 2.0 Full/Low speed
User Interface
  • 1x reset button
  • 5x indicator LEDs
  • 1x addressable WS2812 RBG LED

The 5x indicator LEDs consists of a power indicator LED (labeled PWR), pin 13 status blue LED (labeled D13), two RXReceive/TXTransmit LEDs for data being sent over USB, and a battery charge status indicator (labeled CHG).

The blue status LED is driven by the Arduino's pin 13. The LED turns on when you write the pin HIGH and off when pin 13 is LOW.

The charge LED is controlled by the board's integrated MCP73831 battery charger. If a battery is connected and 5V supplied (via USB or the external jack), it will illuminate when a battery is being charged and should turn off once fully-charged.

The WS2812 RGB LED (labeled 44) is connected to pin 44 which can be used for any purpose.

Power
Power can be supplied to the RedBoard Turbo in the following ways:
  • 5V Micro-B USB connector
  • Single-Cell (3.7V - 4.2V) LiPoLithium Polymer battery to the 2-Pin JST connector
  • External 5V source via barrel jack (4.2V-6.0V for charger, otherwise 3.5V-6.0V)
  • External 5V source via VIN pin (4.2V-6.0V for charger, otherwise 3.5V-6.0V)
Board Size
Arduino Uno R3 form factor of 68.6mm x 53.4mm (2.7in x 2.1in).
Documentation
SparkFun has a hookup guide to the Redboard Turbo that includes code examples in Arduino on how to blink the board LEDs, use the serial ports, and analog I/O. They also have a board pinout and schematics.
