Description
Tilt switch sensors, also referred to as "mercury switches" or "rolling ball sensors", detect orientation or inclination. They usually have a cylindrical form factor with two wire connections (poles) and a cavity in the cylinder with a conductive free mass inside, such as a blob of mercury or rolling ball. When the tilt sensor is orientated where the bottom is downwards, the free mass inside moves onto the poles and shorts them to close the switch.
Tilt sensors by themselves have noise, so a simple LM393 OpAmp comparator circuit is typically used in tilt sensor modules to threshold the signal level. These modules often come with a threshold sensitivity adjustment potentiometer, power LEDLight Emitting Diode, and tilt status LED.
