Ultrasonic distance sensors use non-contact sonar to determine the distance to an object. They work by emitting
and receiving sound waves at a frequency that is too high for a human to hear. The sensor consists of two
ultrasonic transducers, where one acts as a transmitter and the other is a receiver that detects the echo of the
reflected wave if there is an object in front of the sensor. If the time between the transmitted and received
sound waves is measured, the distance can be computed using the known velocity of sound in air
(about 340 m/s).
The ultrasonic distance sensor modules provided here have an output echo pin that goes high when an ultrasonic
burst is transmitted and remains high until the sensor receives the echo. By measuring the time the echo pin stays
high using a microcontroller, the distance can be computed. The distance in meters is
(high level time in seconds) x (340 m/s) / 2.
The HC-SR04 is the most popular ultrasonic sensor module. It has a range of 2cm to 4m(0.8in to 13.1ft) with an accuracy of 3mm. It has an operating frequency of 40kHz and
FOVField Of View angle of 15 degrees.
The JSN-SR04T is another type of ultrasonic sensor module suitable for outdoor applications with a waterproof
sealed emitter-receiver and a separate module. There are two versions of the
JSN-SR04T, v2.0 and v3.0, that differ in their range: v2.0 has a range of
25cm to 450cm, whereas v3.0 has a larger range of
20cm to 600cm. The JSN-SR04T has an operating frequency of
40kHz and and a wider FOVField Of View angle of 75 degrees.
