Description

Resistors are electronic components measured in Ohms (Ω) that are used to limit electrical current and can also be used as voltage dividers and to pull-up or pull-down I/OInput/Output lines.

Most modern resistors are made out of either a carbon-film or metal-film. Carbon-film resistors have a tolerance of 5%, whereas metal-film resistors have lower tolerance of 1%. The tolerance is how much more or less the actual resistance of the resistor can be compared to what its nominal value is. For example, a 1kΩ resistor with 5% tolerance could actually be anywhere between 0.95kΩ and 1.05kΩ. A 1kΩ resistor with 1% tolerance could actually be anywhere between 0.99kΩ and 1.01kΩ.

The maximum power rating should also be considered when selecting a resistor. A resistor can only turn electrical energy running through it into heat, and if this is too much it can burn the resistor. The power ratings for the resistors provided below are 1/4W, 1/2W, and 1W.
