Description
An inductor is an electronic component that stores energy in a magnetic field when electric current flows through it. An inductor consists of an insulated wire wound into a coil and is characterized by its inductance, measured in henry (H), which is the ratio of the voltage to the rate of change of current. Inductors are used to create transformers, regulate the current flowing to a motor, filter out unwanted frequencies, couple signals together, create resonate circuits, and to reduce noise in power supplies.
The types of inductors provided below include Axial Color Ring, Radial, Torodial, Wire Wound SMDSurface Mount Device, and Variable inductors.
- Axial Color Ring Inductors:
- Axial inductors have a very thin copper wire wrapped around magnetic core made of iron or ferrite to increase their inductance. These components have the inductance values printed as color-coded bands just like resistors, that typically range from 1µH to 20H. They are used in line filters and boost converters.
- Radial Inductors:
- Radial inductors, also referred to as power choke or bobbin inductors, have wire wound around a specially made cylindrical bobbin that is secured and protected with shrink tube. The small size makes them suitable for power adapter applications.
- Torodial Inductors:
- Torodial inductors have wire wrapped around a donut-shaped ferrite core. This type of geometry can contain a magnetic field very well because of its closed-loop nature, creating a high magnetic field and high inductance value with fewer windings, and providing much less impedance that helps to improve the efficiency of the inductor. In addition to high inductance, it also has a wide frequency range and low EMIElectromagnetic Interference. Torodial inductors are used in power supplies to regulate the output voltage and current, SMPSSwitch-Mode Power Supply filtering, in inverters to convert DC power to AC power, and in amplifiers to filter and regulate the output signal.
- Wire Wound SMD Inductors:
- SMDSurface Mount Device inductors have a compact size, high inductance, and low cost. They are used to filter out noise and ripple in power supplies, power conversion applications such as DC-DC converters and switching power supplies, and in consumer electronics (smartphones, laptops, TVs) to filter out noise and improve signal quality.
- Variable Inductors:
- Variable inductors are used in applications where the inductance value needs to be adjusted, such as antenna tuning, adjusting the cutoff frequency or resonance point for filters, adjusting the resonant frequency or amplitude of oscillators, matching the impedance of a transmitter or receiver to the load or source, chokes to block high frequency AC signals, adjust the frequency response and tone of an audio signal, and RFRadio Frequency circuits to adjust the resonant frequency or impedance.
