Description

A diode is an electronic component that conducts current primarily in one direction. Diodes are used as rectifiers to convert AC to DC, voltage regulation, protection from voltage spikes and surges, and switching.

The types of diodes provided below include Rectifier, Zener, Schottky, Fast Recovery, and Switching.

Rectifier Diodes:

Rectifier diodes are commonly used in power supplies to convert AC power to DC power with minimal energy loss. They can be used to rectify an AC signal, regulate the output voltage in DC supplies, and in DC-DC converters to convert DC power from one voltage level to another. There are several types of rectifier diodes, including half-wave rectifiers, full-wave rectifiers, and bridge rectifiers.

Schottky Diodes:

Zener diodes allow current to flow in both directions, but specialize in current flowing in reverse. They have a well-defined reverse-breakdown voltage, at which they start conducting current, and continue operating continuously in the reverse-bias mode without getting damaged. They are commonly used as voltage references in electronic circuits, but also can be used for voltage regulation, voltage detection, wave shaping, meter protection, and clipping circuits.

Zener Diodes:

The Schottky diode has a low turn-on voltage, very fast switching action, and low-loss energy at higher frequencies. It is often used in applications where low voltage drop and high switching speed are required, such as voltage regulation, signal conditioning, switching, and logic gates.

Fast Recovery Diodes:

The Fast Recovery Diode (FRD) provides short reverse recovery time (trr), making it superior to typical rectifier diodes in terms of switching speed and switching loss. They are suitable for high-speed rectification applications and high-frequency switching circuits, such as Power Factor Correction (PFC) and DC-DC converters.

Switching Diodes:

The switching diode, also known as a power diode or a high-speed switching diode, is designed to switch on and off in response to changes in the voltage applied across it. They are used in switching circuits, logic circuits, as rectifiers to convert AC to DC, and for transient voltage suppression. They can be found in power supplies, motor control circuits, and telecommunication devices.
