Description

When powering DC electronic devices, the input voltage supply should be at the right level. If you have a DC power source that is different than the DC supply voltage of your device, you can use a DC-DC Voltage Converter to shift the voltage up/down to the required level. There are three types of Voltage Converters: Buck, Boost, and Buck-Boost.

Buck Converters:

A buck converter, also referred to as a step-down converter, is a type of DC-DC converter that decreases voltage while increasing current from its input (supply) to its output (load). They are used where a lower output voltage is required from a higher input voltage, such as powering a 3.3V microcontroller from a 5V power supply.

Boost Converters:

A boost converter, also referred to as a step-up converter, is a DC-DC converter that increases voltage, while decreasing current, from its input (supply) to its output (load). They are used where a higher output voltage is required from a lower input voltage, such as powering a 5V microcontroller from a 3.3V power supply.

Buck-Boost Converters:

A buck-boost converter is a combination of a buck converter and a boost converter in a single circuit that can produce an output voltage that is either greater than or less than the input voltage. It is used in applications where the input voltage can vary widely.
