Description
A capacitor is an electronic component that stores electrical energy by accumulating electric charges on two closely spaced surfaces that are insulated from each other. The amount of capacitance is measured in Farads (F) that tells you how much charge it can store, where more capacitance means more capacity to store charge. Capacitors can be used for energy storage, voltage regulation, filtering, coupling, and decoupling electrical signals.
The types of capacitors provided below include Ceramic, Film (MPT, MKT), Electrolytic (Aluminum, Tantalum), and Variable (Trimmer, Rotary).
- Ceramic Capacitors:
- The most commonly used and produced capacitor is the ceramic capacitor. The name comes from the material from which their dielectric is made. Ceramic capacitors are small in size and have a very low capacitance in pF or nF.
- Film Capacitors:
- Film capacitors have an insulating plastic film as the dielectric, sometimes combined with paper as carrier of the electrodes. Film capacitors are known for their stability, high frequency and temperature charactersitics, and high current surge handling. Two common types of film capacitors are Metallized Polypropylene Film (MPT) and Metallized Polyester Film (MKT). MPT capacitors have a higher dielectric strength and lower dissipation factor than MKT capacitors, but are more expensive.
- Electrolytic Capacitors:
- Electrolytic capacitors can pack a lot of capacitance into a relatively small volume with capacitance in the range of 1µF to 1mF. They're well suited to higher voltage applications because of their relatively high maximum voltage ratings. Electrolytic capacitors are usually polarized where they have a positive pin (anode) and a negative pin (cathode). If you hookup the polarity wrong, they burst open with a pop sound. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are the most popular and are suitable for applications with low to moderate voltage and current requirements. Tantalum electrolytic capacitors are more expensive, but have a higher capacitance-to-size ratio, better frequency response and stability, and are suitable for applications with high voltage and current requirements.
- Variable Capacitors:
- Variable capacitors allow you to adjust the capacitance mechanically or electronically. Variable capacitors are often used in LC circuits to set the resonance frequency (e.g., tuning a radio) or as a variable reactance (e.g., impedance matching in antenna tuners).
